Crazy Lasers mostly Stay safe and see you next Sunday! It started rather cold but ended warm. The turnout was quite good with even a good showing for the MC Scows and 's. And go it did, without filling back in until after We were able to get four of the six classes started when the wind decided to start dying.

The strong incoming current made it impossible to go downwind against the current and the four classes expired the time limit. We reluctantly decided to abandon the days racing at and the crash boats started towing boats in. The club provided a tasty turkey soup and those that chose to stay were able to enjoy their soup and beverages on the deck of the clubhouse.

This afforded a great view of the filling breeze and many commented on how it always fills when we get to the Bar. We look forward to seeing everyone back out this weekend.

Keep your fingers crossed for good winds. He was an avid sailor who both raced and cruised his sloop Firebrand.

He was part of the Frostbite Yacht Club family and EYC for decades and always had a passion for racing, was an excellent competitor, and had a warm smile as well. Thoughts and prayers are with his family and especially with Charlotte. First warning will be at one hour earlier than normal.

See you all on Saturday! The weatherman was partially wrong to our benefit. The rain was basically over with a few sprinkles and a lot of drizzle during the afternoon. The wind was as predicted north It probably averaged about 18 with some higher gusts and a few lulls around All the rain meant the tide didn't start dropping till The current started really ripping at that point.

The racing was good with some really good starts using most of the starting line. The current made the racing challenging. Those who came out early and sailed the beat found there was no way to avoid the current. The trick was to figure out where the velocity was a little less. And there were few areas that showed less current. The beats were close and when the reaches started boats would spread out due to the current.

The leeward mark saw the classes compress again for a challenging beat home. Congratulations to the class for having 5 boats on the starting line. Keep it up and spread the word, we hope to see this class grow.

There was a fair amount of attrition with the Laser class seeing the most boats go in. One Laser had a mast seperate in a capsize. We are not sure if it broke or the two pieces came apart. One went in early as did one JY15 leaving the JY15's with 3 boats. One Ideal18 went in with a torn jib and one Etchell that was borrowed for the day went in early.

All in all it was a good afternoon, competition was hot even if the weather was not. Some boats have not registered yet.

Please do so as soon as possible. Remember to check in and stay clear of classes in their starting sequence. Frank will be running the races with some guest stars while I attend a race Build Your Own Yacht Diy Online Free management seminar.

Fair winds and clean racing this week. Saturday was a beautiful day for setting up the crash boats and making sure Fair and Square II were all ready for the day Sunday.

Sunday came cloudy and 20 degrees colder. Wind was predicted to be from the northwest, we saw instead. Setting the course was tricky until when the wind settled into the northwest. We saw a westerly at first that tried to kick southwest when the sun tried to peak out. We had a westerly course set when it went northwest with 5min to go to first gun. Quick work by the crash boaters got us started on time. The only course adjustment came after 2 general recalls for Lasers, we lengthened the starting line and there were no more recalls.

The racing was good with 7 races for the Etchells, Ideal 18's and JY 15's. The cold and wet Laser sailors got 6 races. There was one protest in the Ideal 18 class but that was resolved in the parking lot instead of the protest room, no blood was drawn. The freshet has not started yet and surprisingly there was no current influence to play into tactics. I'm afraid that will change when all that good skiing snow melts and flows downriver.

It was rumored that a seal was seen In the river by one sailor but there is question as to whether it was a seal or a Laser sailor!!! A delicious soup and spirited conversation was had by all after racing. A quick reminder to all sailors to please check in with the race committee before your first race of the day or when returning to the racing area.

It is equally important to let a crash boat or the RC know if you have to go in for any reason. If you can not notify us on the water please ask a club employee to contact us. When a boat goes in without notifying us we worry and start looking around for seals!!

We are a GO for Sunday 23rd. Keep checking back for more information. The Countdown Timer has been reset. Some good news, our gracious host club, Essex Yacht Club has agreed to extend our season by 1 week. There is currently 7" of ice in the cove. Also, the launching area is frozen. The racing takes place on Sundays in the fall, and then starts up again in early March. Lasers are the most popular class, and the club puts over 20 boats on the starting line. Other classes include Ideal 18s, Etchells and JY 15s. In addition, there is a group of young people sailing s and a developing MC scow class.

While the temperatures can get cold, the competition is quite heated. But one hardy bunch of sailors in Essex finds the changing weather of the season to be perfect for a Regatta. And last weekend they just finished up their 80th season. At a time of year when most skippers are telling stories around the fireplace phototjournalist Freddie Matthis found out what type of skipper braves the elements to pen some new tales.

Special awards will be presented as well as extra soup. If you cannot sail with us, please stop by after racing and say hello. The sailors and the volunteers were tested today. Both the Scow's and 's made it out. There were 3 's and 4 Scow's. One went in during the first race and we had to send the other 2 in with them, sorry, 3 boats for a start.

The Scow's after a slow start are increasing their numbers, I hope this continues. The wind was the shiftiest we have seen all season with shifts as big as degrees.

We saw the wind drop from it's 10 kts to about 4 kts then come through with a blast in the 20's. The blast's caught some skippers unaware and oops The water was warm but the air had enough bite to send at least one wet Laser sailor in to the shower. At least the current was coming in so it wasn't a factor like it has been in previous weeks.

In an attempt to keep a good flow going we went with a longer reaching leg that some of the skippers liked. When possible I will continue giving longer reaches. The Etchell's had some good racing that shuffled the boats around a bit.

Toby won for the day with Chuck 2nd and Bruce 3rd. The Ideal's saw the biggest shuffling out there with Carter winning for the day with his college hot shot daughter and Cindy finishing deep. Being on the wrong side of a shift was extremely painful today.

The numbers were down for the JY's due to Prescott trying out a Scow. Commodore Mark won for the day with the girls finishing 3rd. The Laser's had an impressive 20 boats out for the day. Chris Field showed up and went home with at least on bullet.

Unfortunately I just can't remember the finishing order, sorry guys. Prescott tried a Scow and found out that flat bottom boats can death roll, and very quickly at that. One Scow was single handed and I watched him planing upwind to the finish, pretty cool. Although it was a trying day a good time was had by all. The crash boaters did a great job moving marks to fit the ever changing breeze. This Sunday is our 80th Anniversary Regatta.

Special handmade trophies for the event. Remember we start racing at with a quick skippers meeting at Also the clocks fall back to end Daylight Savings Time.

JY's and 's have set up. I look forward to seeing everyone Sunday. Go north my son and do the best you can If the sailors thought it was challenging out on the water then they should have been watching the wind shift as much as 90 degrees during the starting sequence, 3 different times. Now add a building outgoing current and what do you get. Another one of those incredibly challenging days on the Conn River.

Even with the crazy conditions it was a beautiful day. We were treated to warm sunshine, and some beautiful foliage. Rumor has it that one skipper bribed their crew with the opportunity to do some leaf peeping!!!

Between the shifts I got to see an Eagle from a distance. Unlike the Etchell sailors who got to see an Eagle with a fish close up, must have been an amazing sight. The MC Scows made an appearance and sailed the same convoluted course the Etchell's did. We modified the course to give them a real beat. I believe they had a good time even though they had a long tow home to Pettipaug.

In the Ideal's Carter thought he was out racing tubs again with all the river challenges, but he finished 2nd to Cindy with John in 3rd again. The JY's saw Prescott challenged with the conditions. Richard had 2nd for the day and Kathleen got a third, beating Prescott in 2 races, you go girl!!! And the Laser's had Carl fresh off the Dyer Dhow Derby win come in to show them how it's done, he does know how to work the breeze.

John took a 2nd and Marcus 3rd, that's 4 glasses for Macus. Now for some serious business. We had some boats fail to check in when coming out and some that did not check out.

If a boat fails to check in then it is not out there and therefor will not be scored. A boat that does not check out makes the Horan's cuckoo, more then they already are , trying to find said boats. We do not know if there is a problem and trying to locate said boats slows starts. If it continues we may have to hold the class the missing boat is from and then all sailors suffer.

With regards to the starting line; if you are not in YOUR sequence then you do not belong in the starting area. Boats that did not belong in the starting area affected the start of boats that belonged there. Think of how you would react if someone got in the way of your start. Finishing, if a boat crosses the finish line more than once she WILL be scored the last time she crosses.

Remember that most of the power boats encountered this past weekend were coming from the Canoe Club in Middletown and could barely read the rules of the road placard manufacturers post on the dashboard. I hope to see all out next weekend, remember to buy your FBYC gear on this website.

The race committee and crashboat team were undaunted and readjusted the course continuously to keep up with the capricious conditions. The Ideal fleet was so eager to start they had to be Free Flat Bottom Skiff Plans In recalled twice, by which time the course required revisions.

The RC did a great job of getting it right and Frank did a great job filling in for Stan who was recovering from minor surgery. Overall, the JY and Laser fleets got a big 2 races in while the Etchells and Ideals managed to sail three.

Also don't forget that our 80th anniversary regatta is on November 3. If you know someone who has raced with us in the past, and is not racing now ask them to join us. What a great way to reconnect with your sailing friends.

The easterly breeze made setting the course exceptionally hard. The anchorage restriction meant we had to go north to get any length for the windward legs. This meant a few sailors who were late to get on the water missed their start. We start promptly at , An incoming tide helped them get to the starting area. The breeze was shifty and made for challenging beats and then the current tripped which meant the quickly building flow was at 90 degrees to the wind.

There were times when the windward marks could be laid with no tacks. We lengthened the starting line in order to facilitate more starting area. Then there was the reach against the current. The wind velocity fluctuated enough to leave some boats not moving forward but tracking sideways on the leg, another interesting phenomena to see. Some liked the days racing due to the ever changing conditions and tactics.

Others were unhappy, getting caught on the wrong side of a shift was lethal. We got six races for each class. In the Ideals Robert went for an accidental swim. When he got back on board the boat he saw where not to be on the race course and won the race.

His only first and he managed to tie with Cindy, but she had more firsts. The JY's they had a new skipper, Kathleen Hennessey, and she had a strong second for the day.
